Last reflection

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?

My expectations for this course are to help me better understand art and they were met.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?

My initial posting stated that Art is someone expressing themselves or  how they fell on a canvas., which is still true but with so much more. Like using  the elements and principles of design to help you create art.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?

My favorite original artist was Bob Ross that is on PBS. His is still one of my favorite artists but I also like Van Gogh I love the way he uses color in his works and I also love his landscapes.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I really like taking online class and it’s the same response as my earlier posting. I really enjoy them is much better than a class because you get to work at your own pace and still keep up with the class.

Self Portrait

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces? I really like all the pieces they all some good quality about them.

 2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? I selected using a pencil because I’m used to it and I can erase any mistake easy.

 3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them? a challenge that I face when creating my beard I just couldn’t get it to come in right. I overcame this by using dot to make my beard.

 4. How does this piece represent you?  It shows me for me and not nothing made up. I’m a huge Bills fan so I included a Bill shirt I wear.

 5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?. There is line, color, and texture.

 6. Did you enjoy working on this project? I liked working on this project, but at first it was weird trying to draw myself.

 7. What do you think of your final artwork? I think my final work came out great better than I expected.

The critics are coming

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark they talked about being receptive and that you should put your personal preference aside and that art can come from anywhere.

For the Jackson Pollock film they talked about Jackson Pollock and his two works, Study in Lavender Mist and Autumn Rhythm. They talked about how his works had a negative reference on modern art.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

Yes because you really have to look at the works of art and put your personal preferences aside and really look at the work.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

The films were good especially the Jackson Pollock film. It was good to see different perspective of two people on the art works. It made it more interesting.

Reflection project 4

This was a very interesting project. It took a lot of research and planning. I think choosing nature as my theme was the easiest part of the project. There was just so many different types of works to choose from. I chose works from all over the world and different periods of time I chose nature because I personally enjoy nature art and want to show everyone the beauty of nature.

I think my favorite work from this project is Claude Monet’s Bodmer Oak.  The color is amazing and I just move around the work easily. I like the foliage in the painting and how the painting has light and dark colors.

One of the most interesting works is Francisco Toledo’s. This was a different form of nature art where females carry Venados or (deer) upright position on their shoulders.

This project really opened my eyes to the vast amount of artwork that’s around the world. it was an amazing to see all the different types of works.

Curation

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Lowbrow film I learned that Lowbrow can mean so much different things from comic books to rock band poster to cars and women. There is some very interesting pieces in this film.

For the Tate Approach film it shows how important the space is around the artwork is important and makes a difference on how it is supposed to be portrayed.

For the bones of Contention film it shows how bones from a museum can help tell how different disease from the past affected the Native Americans. Like how Rheumatoid arthritis was found on a specific point on the tenseness river and may have spread to Europe by traders.

For the Great Museums film it shows how Philippe de Montebello , change the whole museum and added over 84,000 thousand pieces to the museum’s collection. Also how curators have to be Knowledgeable about the art work they are considering to buy.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

The videos do not relate to the creation of my Art Exhibit because im doing Nature in art none of the films really talked about Nature art.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?

The films were good especially the Lowbrow and The Philippe De Montebello   I really like the art in the Lowbrow there was some really nice pieces of work. The museum film show the many different types of art under one room.

 Step 5: Document Your Visit

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme.

It was a lot different visiting the Albright Knox art gallery and looking at it from a different perspective.  You kind of have to step back and look at everything. Also you start noticing different things like the lighting and the frames of the artworks.  All in all it was a great experience.

Expressionism

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose both of these films because I wanted to know more about them and both concepts were a huge part of the art world during the early 20th century.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Cubism video it shows the major impact cubism had on the art world during the early 20th century.  Famous works came of it like Juan Gris: The Breakfast Table or Picasso’s Les Demoiselle de Avignon.

For the Expressionism film it shows how expressionism took art to a whole other level.  Art and colors were used to express deep emotions. Like Edward Munch: Ashes or his other work The Scream. He did those works to show a very deep emotion and one of his exhibitions in Berlin was closed because people were outraged at his work.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The video also goes more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Both films were good they went in depth in explaining  both concepts , Cubism and Expressionism.  They showed examples of many works.

warhol

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Warhol film because I went to Albright Knox art gallery and he was the exhibit and I want to learn more about him.

I chose the Uncertainty film because I wanted to know more about it.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Warhol film I like how they made screen printing and the process of it.  Warhol used a lot of screen printing.  The Liz screen was used for many years. Warhol like using screen printing because it helped for mass producing works.

For the Uncertainty: modernity and Art film. It talks about the uncertainty in art how people view the different pieces of work and how that’s changed like in Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and how the people in the painting are represented using corners and different shapes for the bodies, but the viewer still knows what Picasso is trying to represent.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The video also goes more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I really like the film especially the Warhol film. I liked the fact that he likes doing his works on famous people.  The films added depth to understanding the readings and art concepts you get to see the works that go with the reading.

mask

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.
http://s1287.photobucket.com/user/wdhalai01/slideshow/masks?sort=3

I selected these masks because they caught my eye especially the Congo mask it really stood out to me. It seem like they took time and effort to make these masks.

2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.
The Congo mask: the Congo mask was a very interesting mask there is just so much going on with the mask. the different patterns and colors just come together. The different types of element and principle of design that are in the mask are line, color, pattern, value, balance.

the Ecuado mask: the shape of the mask was interesting it stood out to me.
The Element and principles of design that were used in this mask were line, color, and balance.

Handy

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

well it was a different experience using my hand as a subject matter. I never really stopped and looked at my hands extensively.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I chose pencil as my media because I'm more use to it than charcoal and I can erase things more easily.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
it was kind of  frustrating using my non-dominant hand for drawing because I was trying to draw the detail and I would constantly mess up.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
Drawing my left hand there is more detail and it looks more like a normal hand than the drawing of my right hand which turned out to be bigger and less detail.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
I would not consider using my dominant hand to create artwork in the future. I'm right handed and I will use my right hand for artwork.

Religion and art

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose both of these films because I want to know more about them and what the religion means to the art.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concepts that I learned is that Islamic art comes from all over the Middle East.   I really like the ivory caskets that came from Spain, that piece looked like it took time and dedication.  The Ardabil carpet from Iran was amazing it had so much detail.  Islamic art was everywhere, from Calligraphy to pottery, carpets, in mosques, to candle holder and more.

In the Hinduism movie they key concepts that I learned is that Hinduism plays a major part in its art.  They have shrines dedicated to different gods. Also they had cave art that would show stories like Krishna holding up a mountain to shelter his people from rain or a man milking a cow.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings by showing you more different forms of Islamic art and Hinduism art.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Both films were good.  You get to see the different types of art associated with both Islam and Hinduism for is Islam it’s just more than Calligraphy. Islamic art is everywhere.  For Hinduism I think art is part of the religion. Hinduism is  polytheism , which is more than one god. So there is much more art.

Renaissance

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Michelangelo movie because I find him interesting and he is a very well-known artist.

I chose the Leonardo Da Vinci video because I wanted to know more about him and what he did.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concepts that I learned from the Michelangelo movie is that he was an amazing artist and he thought of things that no one at that time would think of.  Also it’s nice to see his drawing before he would do his final works and that it will also help art students and to give them an idea of what Michelangelo was thinking at the time.

The key concepts that I learned from Leonardo Da Vinci video is that he were a very smart and extraordinary person. His ideas were never ending. He was a painter musician, architect, military engineer, sculpture, anatomy and many other professions.  I never knew that he had himself in this many professions.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The video also goes more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life. You can see how extraordinary Da Vinci was and how he sketched things in his books.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The films were good especially the Da Vinci one.  By seeing Da Vinci’s sketches in his books you can see that he was a thinker. He had so many ideas for so many different things.

pharoah

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Cairo Museum video is that I find it very interesting. I like the stories that come with the finding of tombs of the pharaoh and to see the different types of artifacts that are also discovered.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concept that I learned from the More Human Than Human movie is that how they were finding these small figurines for women or called Venuses and they couldn’t explain what they meant. They were finding these Venuses all over the world and they all looked the same. They would be an exaggerated version of women but with no face and no arms.  They came to realize that the hunter gatherers that carved the Venuses   preprogrammed to what mattered most and having that having a fertile and large women.

The Cairo Museum film was great. The key concepts that I learned in this movie is that art tells the story of people’s lives and how they lived. For the pharaoh to have a tomb for shrew it means something. It means that they were sacred.  There was so much detail in every artifact.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The video s help relate to the videos by showing you visually instead of just reading about it. The video shows you much more.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I think the films were amazing especially the Cairo Museum.  It was just amazing to watch and experience.  The different types of artifact just make you wonder how it was thousands of years ago and how they lived. Also how their art work was back then.  Just to see the enthusiasm of the people who worked at the museum shows that they are amazed everyday with what they do. It was just amazing to watch this video and I would highly recommend it.

architecture

1. for each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For The Science of Design I learned that tall building is supposed to sway during high winds but have to sway back to its original position in 7 seconds. Also I like the concept of the smart house. It’s a good way to save energy.

For Last Call for Planet Earth I learned that architecture today is different than it was a long time ago. Architects are planning differently.  They are using more environmentally friendly concepts when building. They would use more glass to let in more light instead of using the lighting from the building. Also using new ventilation systems that will require less use of AC and heating units.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The videos also go more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

The films were really good, I really like both.  The films added depth to understanding of architecture by showing the Architects point of view and how they see the world. Architects now are concerned with the world and are building environmentally friendly buildings that save energy.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

I chose these films because I think going green is very important and we should take care of the environment by saving and reducing energy consumption and looking for different ways to do it.  We only have on planet earth and we should take care of it and reduce the pollutants going into the atmosphere.

peer reviews

1. Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?  When looking at project  1 i agree with the artists images. In some photos you can see different element and principles.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

In project 2 there was one work that was the same as mine.  The Seurat  painting left and impression on me on how an artist can capture a moment in a painting. My peer had a connection with the artist; she was familiar with the artist and enjoyed his works.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?  on image that my peers selected  that piqued my interest is "maninahoundstoothsuit” I just like the use of colors and patterns in it. I would want to know is it the same person  in the image.

5. What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning? I really liked the process of reading our peer reflection. It shows you what other people are thinking and how they feel about different things.  I do find it valuable in my learning because they can pick up on things that I missed in a work or vice versa. Or they might interpret something differently than I can.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

There weren’t any comments on my blog

life of sculpting

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For through the eyes of a sculptor to see a sculpture go from a slab of rock to a work of art and beauty was amazing. His work with the horses was mind blowing to sculpt those piece didn’t just take time but dedication and creativity.  Also sculpting is really big in Italy and people from all over the world come there to learn and sculpt their own masterpieces.

For Glass and Ceramics i couldn’t believe how glass was made. They actually were blowing air into the mix and would form the glass with wood or metal.  I like the stained glass work as well. To cut that piece and put them together looked pretty cool. I’ve never thought of glass and how it made, and I will never look at glass the same way again.  Glass is a work of art to me.

For Installation art was different it was site specific one piece that caught my attention was how they turned a whole building into an installation and how they had a moving piece moving back and forth I thought it was interesting. Tracy Emin’s work was different as well. To use a bedroom as a work of art was very different.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?  The movies and the readings relate because you can see the process, like for sculpting, in the movie you have an idea of how it’s done. You can see the time and dedication it takes for a work of art.  Also Glass it’s described in the reading how its done and you can see how it’s done in the movie.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture

The movies I thought read great in helping me understand the process in sculpting and glass making. I like the fact that there are movies for these readings because you can also see what the readings are about in the movies. For sculpture it was amazing there was a quote in the movie that I liked, “the work of art is in the slab of rock you just have to carve away the pieces around the artwork”.

Gallery visit

A.)   Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

A painting that left an impression on me was Giacomo Balla: Dinamismo di un Cane al Guinzaglio (Dynamism of a dog on a leash) 1912. Oil on canvas.  At first I really didn’t know what it was but then I realized that it was a person walking a dog.  I find this painting very interesting.

Another painting was Georges Seurat: study for Le Chahut,1889. Oil on Canvas. It showed me how a artist can capture a moment in time.  Maybe he painted this image from memory, or he was actually there watching. Very nice piece of artwork.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

I felt a connection with James Ensor: Firworks.1887. Oil and encaustic on  Canvas. It reminded me of my childhood and going to a carnival with my family and staying there until the Fireworks were done. It’s the one time of the year we actually spend a whole day together and we all love the fireworks.

Another painting was Edouard vuilard: the painter Ker-xavier Roussel and his daughter. It just felt like home and a natural everyday setting.  It shows true emotion and it wasn’t acted.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

An artwork that I would like to know more about is Yves Tanguy: Divisibilite indefinite (Indefinite Divisibility). Oil on canvas, 1942. It really caught my eye. I don’t know how to explain it. My mind was trying to figure out what it was but it couldn’t. I really want to know more about this painting.

Another painting I would like to know about is Chaiim Soutine: Carcass of beef 1925.  Oil on canvas. I just couldn’t wrap my head around how someone could do a painting of a carcass of beef.

Logo crazy

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo. For starters I thought it would be a breeze to do it, but it wasn’t. I really had to think about something that would describe me. I must have sketched 20pages worth sketches before I realize what I wanted. but in the end it was perfect.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation. Well at first I wanted I wanted to do a single symbol but it just didn’t have that energy that would express what I thought. Then i thought of what things that I like to do so snowboarding came to me first. Then traveling came to me. So I started drawing a snowy mountain and an airplane.  I realize how hard it was to draw an airplane. But in the end it came out good.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?  The most important discovery that I made in this creation was that it’s hard to come up with a logo to represent you. Many things represent us. So I decided to do a logo that represents what I love to do.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, PowerPoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important information that I learned is that there is a lot of trial and error when it comes to designing a logo and sometimes the simplest solution is best solution and you don’t have to go all out and create something crazy or wacky.  Also that it takes time a lot of it if you want it to be perfect. The videos were helpful as well.  Like in the Marmite video that process seemed it took forever but trial and error they figured out what they had to do and how to do it. On a side not I think I’m going to order some marmite just to see what the craze was about.

the Colors

1.       Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.

The color wheel was kind of fun I liked it. Seeing the different colors and mixing the colors was pretty cool. The value scale was kind of hard. It’s harder than it looks , but it’s interesting to see the different scales.

2.       Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why? I like the acrylic paint.

It was fun and the colors were nice to look at. It was also easier to work with.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery in the creation of these studies is how so many colors can come from the primary colors.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

The videos were very informative and easy to follow. I really liked the painting one. Seeing something from beginning to end is pretty amazing. The  true primary colors are cyan, magenta , and yellow.

Pics

This was an interesting project. Before I read through as to what I was suppose to do I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it. But after doing the readings and watching the videos everything made sense. I see the world differently now, its like I see the elements everywhere I go, which is weird because they have always been there but I  never noticed them. I've been also noticing more colors in everything. Also I noticed different shapes and sizes of different things. Art is all around us and we just have to open our eyes more to see them and appreciate them.  This project was an eye opener and really learned a lot.

the colors

1. Describe Color and its effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color is a function of light. If there isn’t light there can be no color.  Color affects us in simple ways. Color can change our mood, attitude and how we feel about something. People know this about colors, for example in restaurants they would decorate with red because red is believed to increase appetite and increase the food consumption of the patrons of the restaurant.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

There are so many colors in the world. There’s different shade and different intensities of colors and all those colors all come from Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet is amazing. It all started with those colors and the combinations are endless.  Also it’s amazing how different colors make us feel different ways.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?

The biggest impact on me was how passionate the painter was about color that she would go to another country and see them and use them in an inspirational painting. In Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin, red was used a lot and to see the different types of ways a painter can us shades of red and make the painting come alive was amazing.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

This movie showed how painting can show strong emotions and feelings like patriotism, happiness, and sadness and divine artwork of angels, and hell. The painting that I found fascinating was Rogier van der Weyden. The last judgment. The colors showed strong emotions. It also shows the good and bad being judged. It shows heaven and hell.

understanding art

Aesthetics movie: The key concepts that I learned in this video is that many different philosophers have many different views on aesthetics.   The study of art started 5th century Athens.  Some philosophers believed in aesthetics but didn’t like art or didn’t think that there were aesthetics in art.  Foundation for aesthetic that we use today began during the 18th century in England.  Joseph Edison considers marking the beginning of modern aesthetics theory.  Kant main interest was in the beauty in the art work and how a person felt when they saw a work of art and many philosophers felt the same way like Hutcheson and Hume.   Art has changed gradually and different forms of art have come and gone. It’s hard to define art and hard to know what art is. The meaning of art has also changed.  The movie also shows how art has changed due to the technological advances and how they are reproduced.

Carta: the first part of the video talked about the scientific part of aesthetics of art. Works of art are nonverbal communication.  Aesthetic has a staggering effect on emotion. Art is in a constant evolution.  The second part of the video was about the science of art and visual aesthetics.  It talked about how people didn’t like realism art but like grotesque art.   Ramachandran has eight universal laws of art which are, Grouping or “binding”, peak shift principal, contrast, isolating a single cue to optimally excite cortical visual areas (“attention”), perceptual “ problem solving” , symmetry, abhorrence of unique vantage points and suspicious coincidences, and art as a metaphor. It shows how the brain recognizes art and how the brain makes you see it.

Article:  key concepts in the article are artist figuring out how to create depth illusions for people looking at art.  It also talked about emoticons and how a person know that emotion smiley face symbolizes a smiley face even though the emoticon is only dots and a symbols. It also talked about our brain and how it recognizes a color contrast but no light contrast, that's called "equal luminance," and it creates a sort of shimmering quality. I think the most interesting part of the article was the part about the famous and well recognized piece of artwork the Mona Lisa and Da Vinci gave her facial expression a dynamic quality by playing with a discrepancy that exists in our peripheral and central vision systems.  as your eyes move around the Mona Lisa's face, her expression appears to change, she  was painted in a way  that, looking directly at the mouth, she appears to smile less than when you're staring into her eyes. When looking away from the mouth your peripheral visual system picks up shadows from her cheeks that appear to extend the smile.

2. I feel that Francis Hutcheson theory of aesthetics is most important because he changed how people thought about aesthetics from characteristics of the world to the experience of the viewer. This all changed during the 18th century.  Hutcheson said that we experience pleasure when we look or listen to specific things.

3. Changeux ‘s view on aesthetics on art was very scientific.  He talked a lot about the brain and evolution of the humans and the brain.  Ramachandran view was great he talked about how there are eight universal laws of art and how sometime art contradicts with science.

An interesting fact of Changeux was that the discovery of symmetry by homo erectors 1.5 million years ago.  An interesting fact of ramachandran is that he came up with eight universal laws of art.

4. How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text? The videos and the article relate to the readings in the text that they help put things in perspective and make sense of everything.  The videos and the article use scientific ways that we view art like how we see symmetry as art because the brain thinks it’s a live like a butterfly. The article also talked about emoticon and how something like a dot and a symbol can be a smiley face.

5. What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text? My opinion on the movie and the article is that the movies were good the added a lot of information. Changeux was hard to understand so I had to watch his part a few times. Ramachandran was an amazing lecture he kept me interested. I liked how he used personal experience with his lectures and made a few jokes in between. They added depth to the understanding to the text by showing the scientific understanding on why we like art and how it affects the brain.
