warhol

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Warhol film because I went to Albright Knox art gallery and he was the exhibit and I want to learn more about him.

I chose the Uncertainty film because I wanted to know more about it.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Warhol film I like how they made screen printing and the process of it.  Warhol used a lot of screen printing.  The Liz screen was used for many years. Warhol like using screen printing because it helped for mass producing works.

For the Uncertainty: modernity and Art film. It talks about the uncertainty in art how people view the different pieces of work and how that’s changed like in Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and how the people in the painting are represented using corners and different shapes for the bodies, but the viewer still knows what Picasso is trying to represent.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The video also goes more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I really like the film especially the Warhol film. I liked the fact that he likes doing his works on famous people.  The films added depth to understanding the readings and art concepts you get to see the works that go with the reading.

Handy

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

well it was a different experience using my hand as a subject matter. I never really stopped and looked at my hands extensively.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I chose pencil as my media because I'm more use to it than charcoal and I can erase things more easily.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
it was kind of  frustrating using my non-dominant hand for drawing because I was trying to draw the detail and I would constantly mess up.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
Drawing my left hand there is more detail and it looks more like a normal hand than the drawing of my right hand which turned out to be bigger and less detail.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
I would not consider using my dominant hand to create artwork in the future. I'm right handed and I will use my right hand for artwork.

Religion and art

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose both of these films because I want to know more about them and what the religion means to the art.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concepts that I learned is that Islamic art comes from all over the Middle East.   I really like the ivory caskets that came from Spain, that piece looked like it took time and dedication.  The Ardabil carpet from Iran was amazing it had so much detail.  Islamic art was everywhere, from Calligraphy to pottery, carpets, in mosques, to candle holder and more.

In the Hinduism movie they key concepts that I learned is that Hinduism plays a major part in its art.  They have shrines dedicated to different gods. Also they had cave art that would show stories like Krishna holding up a mountain to shelter his people from rain or a man milking a cow.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings by showing you more different forms of Islamic art and Hinduism art.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Both films were good.  You get to see the different types of art associated with both Islam and Hinduism for is Islam it’s just more than Calligraphy. Islamic art is everywhere.  For Hinduism I think art is part of the religion. Hinduism is  polytheism , which is more than one god. So there is much more art.

Renaissance

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Michelangelo movie because I find him interesting and he is a very well-known artist.

I chose the Leonardo Da Vinci video because I wanted to know more about him and what he did.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concepts that I learned from the Michelangelo movie is that he was an amazing artist and he thought of things that no one at that time would think of.  Also it’s nice to see his drawing before he would do his final works and that it will also help art students and to give them an idea of what Michelangelo was thinking at the time.

The key concepts that I learned from Leonardo Da Vinci video is that he were a very smart and extraordinary person. His ideas were never ending. He was a painter musician, architect, military engineer, sculpture, anatomy and many other professions.  I never knew that he had himself in this many professions.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The video also goes more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life. You can see how extraordinary Da Vinci was and how he sketched things in his books.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The films were good especially the Da Vinci one.  By seeing Da Vinci’s sketches in his books you can see that he was a thinker. He had so many ideas for so many different things.

pharoah

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the Cairo Museum video is that I find it very interesting. I like the stories that come with the finding of tombs of the pharaoh and to see the different types of artifacts that are also discovered.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concept that I learned from the More Human Than Human movie is that how they were finding these small figurines for women or called Venuses and they couldn’t explain what they meant. They were finding these Venuses all over the world and they all looked the same. They would be an exaggerated version of women but with no face and no arms.  They came to realize that the hunter gatherers that carved the Venuses   preprogrammed to what mattered most and having that having a fertile and large women.

The Cairo Museum film was great. The key concepts that I learned in this movie is that art tells the story of people’s lives and how they lived. For the pharaoh to have a tomb for shrew it means something. It means that they were sacred.  There was so much detail in every artifact.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The video s help relate to the videos by showing you visually instead of just reading about it. The video shows you much more.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I think the films were amazing especially the Cairo Museum.  It was just amazing to watch and experience.  The different types of artifact just make you wonder how it was thousands of years ago and how they lived. Also how their art work was back then.  Just to see the enthusiasm of the people who worked at the museum shows that they are amazed everyday with what they do. It was just amazing to watch this video and I would highly recommend it.

architecture

1. for each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For The Science of Design I learned that tall building is supposed to sway during high winds but have to sway back to its original position in 7 seconds. Also I like the concept of the smart house. It’s a good way to save energy.

For Last Call for Planet Earth I learned that architecture today is different than it was a long time ago. Architects are planning differently.  They are using more environmentally friendly concepts when building. They would use more glass to let in more light instead of using the lighting from the building. Also using new ventilation systems that will require less use of AC and heating units.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos help explain and show examples for the readings.  The videos also go more in depth and you can see visually how topics in the reading are depicted in real life.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

The films were really good, I really like both.  The films added depth to understanding of architecture by showing the Architects point of view and how they see the world. Architects now are concerned with the world and are building environmentally friendly buildings that save energy.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

I chose these films because I think going green is very important and we should take care of the environment by saving and reducing energy consumption and looking for different ways to do it.  We only have on planet earth and we should take care of it and reduce the pollutants going into the atmosphere.
